Osteoporosis is defined as increased porosity (porosis) of bone (osteo). It is characterized by altered architecture of bone and low bone mass, with an increased bone fragility and subsequent increased risk of fractures. Women are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis after menopause because of hormonal changes that occur, directly affecting the bone density. Approximately 20% of Indian women are estimated to have osteoporosis. Indian women lack awareness on osteoporosis. Urban people are more at risk of osteoporosis because of sedentary life style, decreased exposure to sun light.
